What to expect at your visit
Your appointment includes a full checkup and professional cleaning tailored to your needs. We’ll review your health history, examine teeth and gums, and recommend X-rays only when helpful.
What's Included In Your Dental Exam + Screening
Your dental exam and screening at Championship Dental is designed to be thorough, preventive, and easy to understand. We’ll start by reviewing your medical and dental history, any symptoms you’ve noticed (like sensitivity, bleeding gums, or jaw tension), and your goals for your smile.
From there, we perform a comprehensive evaluation that may include an oral cancer screening, a gum health assessment (checking for inflammation, recession, or signs of periodontal disease), and a tooth-by-tooth exam to look for cavities, cracks, wear, and the condition of any existing dental work.
If needed, we’ll take digital X-rays or imaging to catch issues that can’t be seen on the surface—like decay between teeth or changes below the gumline. After your exam, we’ll walk you through what we found, answer your questions, and outline a clear, prioritized plan for treatment (if anything is needed) plus a personalized prevention plan, including home-care tips and how often you should schedule your next cleaning and checkup.
Professional Cleaning Steps
Your professional cleaning at Championship Dental is focused on leaving your mouth feeling fresh while protecting your teeth and gums long-term. We’ll begin with thorough scaling to remove plaque and hardened tartar buildup along the gumline and between teeth, especially in the spots your toothbrush can’t reach.
Next, we’ll polish your teeth to lift surface stains and smooth enamel for a cleaner, brighter finish, then floss to clear out any remaining debris and ensure your gumline is fully cleaned. If you’re prone to cavities or sensitivity, we may recommend a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel and add extra protection.
For patients showing signs of gum inflammation or infection, we may also offer laser gum therapy as an advanced option to help reduce bacteria, support healthier gums, and promote faster healing as part of your periodontal care plan.
X-Rays: When & Why
Dental X-rays are an important part of preventive care because they help us detect problems that can’t be seen during a visual exam alone. At Championship Dental, we take X-rays only when they’re clinically needed. How often you need them depends on your age, oral health history, cavity risk, gum health, and whether you’re experiencing new symptoms.
X-rays can reveal early decay between teeth, infections, bone loss from gum disease, issues beneath existing fillings or crowns, impacted teeth, and other changes below the surface before they become painful or costly. We also use modern, low-dose digital imaging to keep exposure as minimal as possible, and we’ll always explain what we’re taking and why so you feel informed and comfortable.

Insurance-friendly preventive care
Most dental plans prioritize preventive visits, often covering cleanings and exams on a routine schedule. We accept many PPO plans and can help you understand your benefits before you arrive. Paying out of pocket? Ask about transparent pricing and flexible options.
How often should I get a cleaning & checkup?
For most people, we recommend a checkup and cleaning twice a year, every 6 months. However, if you have or have had had gum disease, frequent cavities, and/or heavy plaque buildup, we may recommend every 3–4 months or a different cadence that best fits your unique needs.
Do cleanings hurt? What if I have sensitive teeth or anxiety?
Dental cleanings are typically quick and comfortable, though mild sensitivity can happen, especially with tartar buildup or gum inflammation.
If you feel any discomfort or anxiety, please tell us right away. We can use topical numbing gel, adjust our technique, and take breaks as needed to keep things comfortable. Your comfort matters to us, and we’re here to help.
Do I need X-rays every visit? How often is normal?
Not every visit. X-ray frequency depends on your risk level. Many patients get bitewings about once a year, while lower-risk patients may need them less often. They help spot issues you can’t see, like cavities between teeth or early bone loss.
What’s the difference between a regular cleaning & a deep cleaning?
A regular cleaning (prophy) removes plaque/tartar above the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is recommended when there are signs of gum disease. It cleans below the gumline to reduce infection and help gums heal.
Will insurance cover my cleaning & exam? What if I don’t have insurance?
Many PPO dental plans cover preventive visits (often two visits per year), but coverage varies.
For uninsured patients, give us a call at 214-941-0039. We're happy to go over pricing and/or financing options to ensure you get the routine care affordable.
